Our 5-Step Texture Removal & Knockdown Process

1. Clear and Protect the Area

Before starting, we remove all furniture from the room whenever possible. If items can’t be moved, we of course carefully cover furniture, flooring, and fixtures with plastic sheeting, drop cloths, or tarps to protect your home during the process.

2. Soak and Scrape Old Texture

For ceilings that have never been painted, we lightly moisten the texture to minimize dust. As a result, using professional tools, we carefully scrape away the stipple or popcorn texture. Preparing the surface for a smooth or knockdown finish.

3. Apply Knockdown or Smooth Ceiling Base

Once the old texture is removed, we apply joint compound (mud) to level the ceiling and create a flawless finish. For California knockdown ceilings, two coats of mud are applied, followed by the knockdown technique to achieve the signature textured effect. On the other hand for smooth ceilings, three coats of mud are applied with sanding in between each layer to ensure an even, seamless surface ready for painting.

4. Prime and Paint the Ceiling

After all repairs and sanding, smooth ceilings are primed and painted with 1 coat of primer and 2 finish coats. Our team typically sprays the finish to ensure a uniform, professional appearance. So most homeowners choose a low-sheen finish, including matte, low-luster, or satin, for a modern, elegant look.

5. Thorough Clean-Up

We carefully remove all protective coverings, drop cloths, vacuum and wipe the area. Leaving your home clean and dust-free. Your ceiling is ready to enjoy immediately, looking fresh and modern!
